Architectural Anomalies explores Vancouver Chinatown’s historical and cultural milestones through the study of its buildings, both existing and lost. It examines how the unique features, program, and lifespan of Chinatown architecture was shaped by historical, cultural, and socioeconomic pressures. Six specific buildings were chosen to be modeled in card stock to create this series of work. Individual buildings were selected for their narrative in built form - specifically how their unique features were the result of a pivotal events in Chinatown’s development. The work will include companion Do-It-Yourself model kits that can be assembled by the user. This work is intended to explore the relationship between curiosity, experience, and discovery. It is an invitation to participate and in doing so the viewer becomes a collaborator.
